Google Maps is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle, or public transportation.
Google Maps began as a C++ desktop program at Where 2 Technologies. In October 2004, the company was acquired by Google, which converted it into a web application. After additional acquisitions of a geospatial data visualization company and a realtime traffic analyzer, Google Maps was launched in February 2005. The service's front end utilizes JavaScript, XML, and Ajax. Google Maps offers an API that allows maps to be embedded on third-party websites, and offers a mobile app for iOS and Android.
As of October 2011, Google Maps has been used by more than 1 billion people worldwide.
In May 2007, Google announced that it was adding street view imagery to 25 U.S. cities, including New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. The first two were released in May 2007, while Washington D.C.'s was released in August 2007. In November 2008, Google Street View was made available to users in the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom. On May 12, 2010, street view was added to Google Maps for BlackBerry.
On February 8, 2011, Google announced that it was adding street view imagery to five more U.S. cities: Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Denver, and Street View of the White House.
On May 25, 2011, Google announced that street view was available in a total of 50 U.S. cities.
As of June 2017, Google Maps has been used by more than 1 billion people worldwide. The service is free to use, but there are some features that require a subscription. These features include turn-by-turn navigation, live traffic information, and street view.
Turn-by-turn navigation is a feature that gives directions to a destination. The directions are displayed on the screen as text or spoken aloud. Live traffic information is a feature that shows real-time traffic conditions on the map. Street view is a feature that allows users to see a 360-degree view of a street.
